HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TRIP:
IKALTO-ALAVERDI MONASTERY-GREMI-KHAREBA WINERY-GURJAANI KVELATSMINDA CHURCH
We drive from Tbilisi to the Kakheti region through the Gombori mountain range. Kakheti is the most important region for wine-making, characterised by its unique vine grape varieties, unusually ideal climate, topography, and centuries of exceptional wine-making experience. Our first destination is Ikalto monastery and academy, dating from the middle ages. After Ikalto we visit the Alaverdi monastery where monks still produce wine in Kvevri (traditional Georgian vessels for wine) in the wine cellar which was built in the 11th century. From Alaverdi we drive towards Gremi which used to be a capital of the Kakheti region from the 15th to the 17th centuries. There we will see the remains of the town and the Archangels Church from the 16th century. Our next destination is Khareba winery*. Their wine cellar is carved in the rock of the Caucasus Mountain Range. After the winery we drive to the town of Gurjaani and visit the unique two-domed church of Gurjaani Kvelatsminda, dating from the 8th century. Drive back to Tbilisi.
*Instead of khareba winery, it is possible to visit a family run natural winery and have a lunch with wine tasting with the hosting family.
