HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TRIP:
JVARI MONASTERY-ANANURI-ZHINVALI WATER RESERVOIR-GUDAURI MOUNTAINS-MOUNTAIN KAZBEG-GERGETI TRINITY CHURCH-SVETITSKHOVELI CATHEDRAL
The day starts with a visit to the Jvari monastery (a 20 minute drive from Tbilisi), dating from the 6th century. This is a UNESCO world heritage site from where there is an amazing view of the town of Mtskheta. After the Jvari church we continue driving to the north of Georgia and stop at Ananuri, a fortified complex from the middle ages with views of the Zhinvali water reservoir. After Ananuri we pass the Gudauri ski resort and the Jvari pass(2395m) to reach Stepantsminda(Kazbegi). After lunch in a local restaurant we either walk to the trinity church of Gergeti, dating from the 14th century, or drive up to the hill where the church is located. After the visit to the monastery and enjoying the view of 3rd highest peak in Georgia (Kazbeg, 5047m.) we leave the town. On the way back we visit Mtskheta, a 3000 year old town and first capital of the eastern Georgian kingdom of Iberia. In Mtskheta we visit the Svetitskhoveli cathedral, another UNESCO world heritage site. After exploring the cathedral we have time for souvenir shopping and then we drive back to Tbilisi.
