HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TRIP:
BORJOMI PARK, KHERTVISI FORTRESS, VARDZIA CAVE MONASTERY, MURALS IN THE CHURCH OF THE DORMITION, PARAVANI AND SAGHAMO LAKES
We drive from Tbilisi to the south-west of Georgia. On the way to Vardzia we visit the Borjomi park and taste their world-famous mineral water. This area, the Borjomi Kharagauli national park, is one of the larges national parks in Europe. After a walk in the park we continue our way and stop to visit the Khertvisi fortress located at the confluence of two rivers: Mtkvari and Paravani. Khertvisi is one of the oldest fortresses in Georgia, dating from 2nd C BC. After Khertvisi we drive 16km and reach Vardzia. We first visit an eatery, run by a local family, which serves only organic food and wine produced by them. After lunch we start an hour's walk into the caves of Vardzia. Initially built as a cave town in 12th century under one of the greatest rulers of Georgia, Queen Tamar, Vardzia became a monastery, a spiritual, political, cultural and educational centre of the country. Even though only 15% remains, its still amazing because of its architecture, scale and preserved murals in the Holy Virgins church. After exploring Vardzia we drive back to Tbilisi via the Paravani and Saghamo lakes.
