Kakheti Monasteries And Wine

Visit a few medieval monasteries of Kakheti region. Kakheti  is the most important region for wine-making, characterized by its unique vine grape varieties, unusually ideal climate, topography, and centuries of exceptional winemaking experience. After the monasteries, we will take you to the local  natural winemaker family for the traditional  Georgian feast.

Tour Itinerary: 


We drive from Tbilisi to Kakheti region via the Gombori pass. Kakheti is the most important region for winemaking, characterized by its unique vine grape varieties, unusually ideal climate, topography, and centuries of exceptional wine-making experience. Our first destination is Ikalto monastery and academy complex, dating from the Middle Ages. After Ikalto we visit the Alaverdi monastery where monks still produce wine in Kvevri (traditional Georgian vessels for wine) in the wine cellar which was built in the 11th century. From Alaverdi we drive to Gremi which used to be a capital of the Kakheti region IN 15-17th centuries. There we will see the remains of the town and the Archangels Church from the 16th century. Next destination is a village Zemo Alvani and a local natural winery where we have a wine tasting and a lunch - drive back to Tbilisi.
