David Gareja monastery

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TRIP:

GAREJA DESERT, VILLAGE UDABNO, LAVRA MONASTERY, UDABNO MONASTERY, MURALS IN THE CAVES, VIEWS OF AZERBAIJAN *.

Drive from Tbilisi. Pass through the village of Udabno and reach the David Gareja monastery. It is situated deep in the semi-desert south-east of Tbilisi.  The Monasteries were founded in the 6th century by one of the 13 Assiryan monks St. David.  Visit  Lavra monastery and st. David's grave. Walk up to Udabno to see some of the fine frescos dating from the 9th-13th centuries and cave architecture. Enjoy the views of Azerbaijan territory. Walk down. Drive back to Tbilisi.
